LAWAH

About

Latin women artists working in the greater Houston area LAWAH, is a group of women who formed a community to mentor and support each other in their art careers that are at various stages of development. We share the inmigration as a common element in our art practice.

The creative process was the crisol to develop an interest in expressing how we as women had to adapt and crossbreed our different cultures.

Since 4 years ago when our group was born we started our path of searching places to express our latina voice and solidify our group as part of the latinX community.  Our practice is defined by the intense use of color, line and symbolism of the culture we brought with us and left behind with our migration.

Many of us still have families in our countries of origin. A displacement feeling is a constant. We are weaving our own stories in this country as they unfold in front of us. We had to learn and adapt and be resilient. We represent the cumulative knowledge through our paintings, forms and images depicted in our work.

Ours is a visual proposal of syncretism of our different origins. Our art expression finds its way by merging through maps, lines, geometry or more representative urban landscapes.

We aim not to forget our own roots from our homeland of Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela but at the same time we grab this new country and identity which has become our new found home in Houston. Our work is this new dialogue enriching both cultures and nurturing us and our community. Small openings or windows to our countries is how we let our viewers dialogue with our places of origin and get to know part of our history.
