About
Maiz Creative Studio is a newly formed team conceived by Oscar Rivas and Eduardo Herrera. It’s our mission to focus and draw inspiration from Latin American pre-Hispanic arts, crafts, and designs for our artwork and crafted contemporary pieces. We know that utilizing elements from the pre-Hispanic artistic elements in the current contemporary landscape will enrich our community and cultural identity, inviting us to look to the past of pre-Columbian cultures and their different visual languages, crafts and knowledge
Eduardo Herrera A.K.A. El Edu was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador where he learned visual arts techniques early in his life through close artistic relatives. Later, he pursued a career in multimedia design at the Instituto Metropolitano de Diseño and photography at the Alliance Francaise of Quito while learning other art practices with friends and family. He was part of several art shows, performances and experimental projects during his college years right before he moved to Houston in 2009. In 2013, he co-founded Chimera Art Magazine. Chimera showcased underground and upcoming Houston artists. This project allowed him to learn and document some of the Houston arts community. He became a curator and organizer of art shows that took place in coffee shops, bars, non-profit organizations as well as other alternative spaces. He left the magazine in 2015. Since then, El Edu has taken part in collective exhibitions in Houston, including mural festivals like The Meeting of Styles and HUE Mural Fest. He was also one of the 2016 chosen artists for the Washington Street Arts District Art Wall. The same year he created Callisemica, the first art show in Houston focused on calligraffiti, lettering and type art. In 2019, he was one of the awarded artists for the Houston Artadia program. Now he is doing his artwork independently and working as muralist assistant for local artists while being a freelance graphic designer.
