Erika Whitney
About
I make non-objective paintings and sculptures. In my work, I enjoy the textures created using various techniques to apply paint to a canvas. Color relationships are an important part of my work; using transparent layering to show the painting's history. My work often has a portal or space to travel through visually; a portal you can travel through. Installing my work is an integral part of my process. I feel that’s when my paintings genuinely come to life.
Making work is a place I have always felt safe to be free even in times of doubt. I know that I can do whatever I want, and the viewer may get something completely different out of it than I do. I believe that being a woman artist isn’t about showing my femininity, but it's about being human. The work is about deciding what's right for you what’s suitable for someone else. It’s about a give and a take. It's about Compromise. I respond to the materials, and I control the materials as well. Navigating through life is like making art.
