Sampongart
About
Nana Sampong is a multi-disciplinary artist living and working in Houston, Texas. Born in Kumasi, Ghana and growing up between Ghana and Sierra Leone, his interest in art grew from experiencing and absorbing the vast cultural and spiritual imagery of both countries. What began as a childhood obsession with tracing and drawing images from books and magazines, eventually led him to move to the US and pursue a degree in graphic design at University of Houston. However, the creative limits of graphic design made it impossible to express himself fully. Nana eventually rediscovered his passion for painting when a roommate brought home a headboard he had found on the roadside and gave it to Nana to paint. Since then, there was no turning back.
Sampong’s artwork has been shown in exhibitions in Ghana and the US, beginning in 1997 when he was among a few artists selected by the Ghanaian government to create a visual montage in commemoration of the country’s independence. Since then his work has been selected for group shows including the ‘Big Show’ at the Lawndale Art Center in Houston, TX and ‘Home’ group show at Ouichi Gallery in Brooklyn, NY.
