Meaning in the Digital Age

The best moments of my life are when I forget myself. To make this a ritual I use chance, choice, and personal myth to find and then anchor myself through touch. For example, the Yourself/Myself series explores emotional and psychological qualities of home life to the point of viewers mistaking the digital for paint or ink as photography. After having to move so many times for work and education a simultaneous paternal, friendly, and romantic life persists as fantasy. In turning inward from that, the Childhood series dives deeper to find the mysterious in the mundane. In isolation, a spoon. Solace from a wooden toy. Sometimes I even make my pathology for meaning the material of the work. For example, by filtering through hundreds and sometimes thousands of personal images the Strategic Meaning series underscores just how much process can exhume from an uncertain life. There’s infinite variations but depending on the work, I might collage, paint the collage, scan the painting, screen print it on fabric, etc. In effect, an exhaustive experience forms a personal memory that produces a genuine artifact of self. When I am working forgetting becomes a moment of perfect reality.
